About  Ruthke

HI there, I'm Ruth Damari

In 2018, when I was studying theater set design at the Academy of Arts in Firenze,we were asked to experiment with the craft of crocheting.

Never until that moment did I think I would find a real interest in this "old ladies" craft but without noticing, only a few weeks later, I found myself taking a bus every day after school to sit on a hill in a village near Firenze where I would teach myself how to crochet, tie and untie for hours and daydream.

And since then I have not stopped crocheting (and dreaming). I found in the craft of crocheting a renewed connection to nature and to the ever changing dynamics of life. My crocheting is often characterized by improvisation and my creations are OOAK because as I tend to be adventurous in my spirit, also in crocheting I prefer to try and guess, and inventing new things every time. I like to go with the flow, rather than work according to patterns.

Other than crochet, I am attracted to and involved in various forms of creation and art, such as photography and videography, where my main interest is usually in the connection between the person and their environment, and the “one time-ness” that underlies the human experience. I draw great inspiration from nature and mostly use natural yarn. I also have great appreciation to ancient traditional crafts, as I see real spiritual value in self production – just like in the  old days, when people used to make things themselves, for their own daily use. In this age when everything is mass produced and nothing is made to last, this practice of “making your own” is significant to me and I believe that this passion and these values are reflected in my works and products.
